The opportunity:

An exciting new long-term opportunity exists for a Clinical Biostatistician to join the Melbourne Epicentre at Melbourne Health. This role creates immense opportunity for an aspiring Biostatistician to develop a research career in clinical biostatistics, with dedicated involvement in clinical trials, clinical epidemiology with big data and health services research. The clinical biostatistician will have the opportunity to work in collaboration with clinical researchers and basic scientists within the institution, as well as being a part of national and international research projects led by Prof. Sanjoy Paul, the Director of the Melbourne EpiCentre. The EpiCentre is leading several early and late phase clinical trials and clinical and pharmaco-epidemiological studies with big primary care data from US and UK, funded by NHMRC and multinational pharmaceutical companies. The position's purpose is to contribute in design and analysis of clinical studies, undertake clinical epidemiological and biostatistical research, provide biostatistical consulting to clinical and basic science researchers, and participate in associated activities such as research supervision and mentoring. At the senior level you will have the opportunity to take a leadership role within the Melbourne EpiCentre, to lead statistical aspects of projects and mentor junior staff and PhD students.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provision of biostatistical research support to clinicians, researchers and clinical students at Melbourne Health, Royal Melbourne Hospital.
  • Contribute to development of research program(s) in areas of clinical trials, epidemiology, biostatistics and health services research.
  • Collaborate in research projects within the Centre and beyond.
  • Develop grant applications to support research activities in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Publish high quality research papers in leading scientific journals.
  • Undertake collaborative research, including the provision of study design and statistical support to research partners.
  • Design, conduct and analyse data from clinical trials and large multinational longitudinal primary care databases.
  • Act as Project Statistician on various clinical trials and non-trial projects with responsibility for all statistical tasks on assigned projects. To be successful in this role you will have:
  • Masters in Biostatistics or Statistics with minimum of two years' experience in clinical research, or a PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics with minimum of one year experience in clinical research.
  • Strong methodological background in the fields of clinical trials, clinical epidemiology and clinical biostatistics.
  • Strong statistical programming skills, with programming expertise in at least two of the standard software packages: SAS, STATA & R.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical analyses including interpretation and presentation of results.
  • Excellent organisation skills, including the ability to set priorities, manage time, plan work to meet deadlines and work effectively under pressure.
  • Familiarity with international regulatory/research guidelines on drug development, GCP, and statistical principles (especially ICH guidelines).
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports and manuscripts for publication in clinical and scientific journals and to interact verbally with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively and effectively within a team, including national and international collaborators.
  • Proactivity and willingness to learn new analytical techniques and methods to address project needs.
  • Keenness in developing clinical research career.
